Choosing the Placement of Your Breast Implants

One of the most significant and satisfying improvements to a woman’s physical appearance can be achieved with breast augmentation surgery. If you’re unhappy with the size or shape of your breasts, breast augmentation with breast implants could be the answer.

Breast implants of various sizes, shapes and styles are available and suitable for a wide range of preferences and needs. These implants will be surgically inserted either just under the breast tissue or beneath the muscle. Breast augmentation Vancouver and breast augmentation New Westminster patients will need to decide which placement option to proceed with based on their anatomy and aesthetic goals.

Here is a summary of the benefits and drawbacks of each option:

Above Muscle (Subglandular) Placement

Placing the breast implants above the muscle will typically take less surgery time and a shorter recovery time can usually be expected. There can also be less initial discomfort after the breast augmentation surgery. If required, re-operation may be easier with subglandular placement; however, subglandular implant placement can cause the breast implants to be more easily felt (palpable) and more visibly noticeable. Hardening of the breasts, or capsular contracture, and sagging are also more common with subglandular placement; and mammography breast imaging may be more difficult.

Below Muscle (Submuscular) Placement

Submuscular placement of breast implants involves placing the implants below the muscle and can help mitigate the drawbacks associated with subglandular placement. Although surgery and recovery time can be marginally longer and initial discomfort can be greater with submuscular placement, this type of placement allows for better mammography imaging and is associated with a reduced risk of some local complications. This type of placement also makes the breast implants less likely to sag and less palpable (or visible) compared to subglandular placement.
