Choosing the Type of Incision for Your Breast Implants

Breast augmentation surgery can be carried out under general or local anaesthesia, with general anaesthesia being the preferred choice. The procedure can take anywhere from one and a half to three hours to complete depending on the specific procedure, technique being used and the individual having the surgery

After the incision is made, the breast implant is either placed under the breast tissue (subglandular placement) or under the muscle (submuscular placement). There are three primary types of incisions used by Dr. Ukani when performing surgery on his breast surgery Vancouver and breast surgery New Westminster patients.

Periareolar Incision

Periareolar incisions involve inserting the breast implants by making an incision around the edge of the nipple where it meets the breast tissue. The scar from the incision is virtually invisible because of how well it blends with the natural change in skin colour. This technique allows placement of the breast implants to be either under or over the muscle tissue and gives Dr. Ukani a great degree of precision given the close proximity of the incision to the treatment area. As well, in the event of subsequent surgeries, an additional incision will often not be required. Drawbacks of this technique can include difficulty breastfeeding and a loss of sensation in the nipple area.

Inframammary Incision

When the inframammary incision is used, an incision is made in the fold under the breast. The scar is relatively inconspicuous and the breast implant can be placed either under or over the muscle tissue. Additional incisions are typically not required in the event of future surgical procedures and most women will experience greater success with breastfeeding since the incision minimizes the risk of damage by bypassing the milk ducts.

Transaxillary Incision

This technique involves making an incision under the arm so there are no scars in the breast area. Although the scars are visible when the arms are lifted, Dr. Ukani mitigates the visibility of the scars by ensuring the incisions are placed as inconspicuously as possible. It is generally not possible to reuse the incision should a corrective surgery be needed; instead either the periareolar or inframammary technique will need to be used.
